Delegation as Development

Delegation is a powerful way to increase work production, increase engagement, provide powerful development opportunities and empower your team.

Using a delegation model can ensure that you are providing people with what they need in order to be successful in their work and development. The SPOC model helps you delegate work to others while supporting the development of an individual’s skills at the same time. The SPOC model can be used by anyone and does not require an individual to have direct reports.

To achieve the desired results, it is recommended to follow the below elements in order.

SPOC Model:

Select: Select the most appropriate individual for the task or project. Consider the development opportunity, expertise and bandwidth.

Prepare: Prepare the individual for success by setting clear expectations, define goals, discuss obstacles and encourage questions.

Observe: Observe and monitor progress. Provide feedback and resist the urge to solve the problems for them.

Coach: Be their #1 advocate in this venture.

Practice the SPOC model this week and continue to seek out opportunities to delegate and support.
